A reader app that pays off
A reliable reader lets you learn lines, drill scenes, and self-tape whenever you need. One good reader does it all and pays dividends in the long run.
On your own
- Every rehearsal starts with a scramble to pull your materials together.
- Learning lines takes longer, tied to a desk with a script in hand.
- Inconsistent prep piles up over time, and directors notice.
With ActOnCue
- You arrive organized and prepared, ready to concentrate on the acting.
- Drill your lines anywhere, in the park or on your commute, and learn them faster.
- You show up consistent and reliable, the actor people want in the room.
A reader will not make you a better actor, your craft does that. But like an acting class, it is tooling worth investing in, so more of your time and energy goes into the work that matters.
Meet your cast
Give every character a voice in their own language. Search a library of natural, expressive voices across many languages and accents, or record the other characters yourself for a fully human read.

Your questions, answered
Feel free to contact us with your ideas or questions!
What is a line reader?
A line reader is your scene partner for rehearsals. It listens, recognizes cues and plays the other characters in the scene, so you can run any script on your own.
Why use a line reader?
A line reader is a great substitute for another actor. Often your friends or other actors aren't available to rehearse with and read the other characters. Our line reader produces a naturally sounding conversation between all characters in the scene.
Is it free?
Yes, it is available to use for free. The reader is just part of many features that we make for actors. For extras, such as character voices and other add-ons, you can top up your balance.
Which devices are supported?
Line reader runs in the web, on any device that has Internet. That means: iPhones & Androids, iPads and laptops.
What languages does your reader support?
The reader's voices span many languages, including English (US, UK, Australia, India and more), Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. We keep adding more over time.
Can it just read my script aloud to me?
Yes. In reading mode the reader speaks the whole scene aloud with real voices, every character back to back, so you can listen to your script or learn a scene by ear. Listening is free; you only choose interaction when you want it to listen back and come in on your cue.
Can I listen to the whole scene?
Absolutely. Drop in the script, assign a voice to each character, and press play. The reader reads every part aloud so you can listen to the whole scene, no cast required. It's the fastest way to hear a new scene out loud.
Can it listen to me and respond on my cue?
Yes, that is Perform mode. You read your lines out loud and the reader listens live, recognizes your cue, and comes in with the other characters at the right moment, just like a real scene partner. It is what most actors use to rehearse and self-tape.
Does the line reader require an internet connection or sign-up process?
You will need to sign up so you can create and manage your scenes in your account.
How does it work?
Drag and drop (or paste) your script to set up your first scene. Next, pick which character you are going to play. Select a voice you like for the reader. Next, press play to run the lines. When you say the last word of your line (the cue or trigger word), the line reader speaks their line in response.
How do I add new lines?
There are many ways to add or edit lines in your script: new lines can be added by pasting your script, transcribing audio or typing them out. Or by uploading your script as an image.
Can I change the way the reader sounds?
Yes, you can fully customize the voices of other characters by picking from a library of natural-sounding voices. You can generate audio from text, or from your own recordings (which allows you to control the pitch, speed up or slow down the audio).
Does it come with a teleprompter?
Yes, our reader has a built-in teleprompter to help you memorize your lines and provide you with hints at recording time, to make sure you are always on script.
